Split Personality

Thought of the day: if one zygote divides a little too enthusiastically, it splits from one embryo into two, making monozygotic twin babies. This means that at one point identical twins were actually the same being.

Unless, of course, that one cell wasn't really a being yet.

Oh, the bioethical implications....

“Always recognize that human individuals are ends, and do not use them as means to your end.” Immanuel Kant

Whoa! Three blog posts in 3 days! No wonder we can't keep up! We're used to checking every week or so and finding nothing! :)
Have a great week--

I love your powers of reasoning Carla! This one is truly a stumper. It comes down to whether we define a human "life" as something physical or spiritual in nature.

If it's physical, then perhaps identical twins are really part of the same "life" which was the initial fertilized egg.

If it is spiritual, perhaps we have to decide whether identical twins have a split spirit (ok, that sounds weird), or whether their individualized spirit parcels just came in late.

And of course, I am making all kinds of assumptions to state the above.

Ugh. I love how you make me confused.
